Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day journey of Lent
ow will you use this season of prayer and sacrifice to observe the 40 days our Lord spent in the desert?
Our ‘desert’ is not one of sand and heat and thirst – but a symbolic space of withdrawal and silence where we meet God away from modern distractions … confront our weaknesses, fears and temptations … and deny ourselves foods or activities we enjoy.
Along with giving up chocolate or screen time, we can also resolve to give up bad habits – selfishness, laziness, indifference, gossiping or complaining.
But beyond giving something up, we should also think also about taking something on.
This year, Pope Leo XlV calls on us to help build a ‘year of peace’. While we may not be able to stop a war, we can commit to building peace in our own families and communities. Lent is the perfect opportunity to pray for understanding, let go of past grievances, mend a quarrel or forgive someone who’s wronged or hurt us.
Each one of us can perform small acts of mercy and kindness to help uplift those in need. If you don’t know anyone in need personally, consider donating food or clothing to your parish St Vincent de Paul Society. Or make a financial contribution to an organisation that helps the poor and needy – either in your own community or further afield.
As a supporter of the Zulu Missions, you know that many Mission people face real hardship and hunger every day. Your Lenten offering – made online now – has the power to ease their suffering through the Church’s many outreach programmes.
Right here in our city, the weekly soup kitchen run by St Joseph’s for poor and homeless people is just one example. Donations toward meat, bread, rice and vegetables are always most gratefully accepted.
Your Lenten offering completes the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please remember to let us know your special intentions so we can pray for you during this important season of reflection, prayer and self-denial.
May God bless you and give you all the graces you need to make this a sacred time for Our Lord, His Church and your neighbour.
