hen the Year of Mercy ended, Pope Francis asked us to keep showing the mercy the world so desperately needs.
Our Cardinal Napier wondered what could be done to answer the Holy Father’s Call – and God showed the way to create a Centre for Healing for those afflicted by the scourge of addiction … especially those who are homeless and barely existing on the street.
Although helping addicts isn’t a popular cause for empathy and support – because it seems that people bring the misery of substance abuse on themselves – we only have to turn to the Gospels to be reminded how generous Jesus was with His mercy and forgiveness towards those who got themselves into trouble of some kind.
Work has already started to renovate and modify disused buildings at Ekhukanyeni Mission, where residents, as well as a ‘house mother and father’ will be accommodated. But much more is needed to get the Centre up and running.
In addition to providing the residential care and the specialist practitioners to run the 12-month programme, priests in the Archdiocese are being trained to effectively counsel individuals and families affected by substance abuse. The final phase of the programme will include training for employment of some kind to give people purpose and hope for the future.
Please will you be part of establishing this very special centre which will carry the Cardinal’s name? Your gift made online now will be your own personal act of mercy, giving expression to Pope Francis’ call for practical actions that carry forward the message of mercy into every year.
The tragic souls in our Archdiocese who have turned to substances to dull the pain, misery, and hopelessness of their lives on the street can be given the chance of a better life. Your gift will help to give that chance. Please help if you can.
