How do you recover from a disaster like this?
It’s been a month since a deadly tornado swept through the town of Tongaat, 40km north of Durban. Twelve people lost their lives, and over 1200 were left homeless.
Crisis relief teams immediately sprang into action to provide emergency shelter in churches and town halls. Generous people and organisations from near and far donated food, clothing and blankets to those who had lost everything in the ferocious storm. And the community rallied round to clear rubble and repair damaged homes.
But now the crisis teams have withdrawn and life goes on. And those living in poorer areas, without jobs or money in the bank, are struggling to get back on their feet.
Father Nkazimulo, acting parish priest at St Joseph’s, has family members living in the area. He spoke of the ongoing needs of those Mission people who have been worst affected. Please travel with him in the video alongside, as he drives through these areas. Witness the devastation wrought by the storm. And, if you can find it in your heart, please reach out to help.
Your donation, made today, will help provide building materials – cement, blocks, wooden planks and tin roof sheeting. Or it could replace furniture, mattresses and bedding literally blown away by the force of the wind. Or damaged household items, school books and stationery.
Any amount you can spare will be warmly appreciated by those struggling to rebuild their lives. Above all, your concern and kindness speaks of humanity. Or as we call it here in Africa – uBuntu – which expresses the feeling that we cannot live happily and comfortably if we see that our neighbour is suffering.
Please do use the special intentions form below, if you would like prayers offered at our special monthly Mass for mission friends. Let’s share thoughts and prayers for one another as we face life’s challenges, comforted by the knowledge that God is always with us.
